The company adheres to the corporate tenet of "We do not produce medicines, but help pharmaceutical companies make good medicines".Transglutaminase is an enzyme that catalyzes the formation of covalent bonds between protein molecules, a process known as protein crosslinking. This enzymatic activity contributes to the structural integrity and stability of proteins by creating strong molecular networks, and it plays essential roles in various physiological processes, including blood clotting, skin formation, and tissue repair.
In addition to protein crosslinking, transglutaminase is involved in the post-translational modification of proteins by catalyzing the covalent attachment of primary amines, such as the amino group of lysine residues, to various small molecules or proteins. This modification, known as transamidation, can alter the functional properties of proteins and modulate their interactions with other biomolecules.
Transglutaminase is implicated in diverse biological processes, including wound healing, tissue remodeling, and the formation of biological barriers. It is particularly abundant in the skin, where it contributes to the crosslinking of structural proteins, such as collagen and keratin, leading to the formation of a resilient and protective barrier.
Furthermore, transglutaminase plays a role in the formation of blood clots by crosslinking fibrin molecules, which is essential for hemostasis and the prevention of excessive bleeding. It also contributes to the stability of extracellular matrices in tissues and the maintenance of structural integrity in organs.
Transglutaminase has been linked to several pathologies, including autoimmune diseases and neurodegenerative disorders, where its dysregulation can lead to aberrant protein crosslinking and the accumulation of protein aggregates.
In summary, transglutaminase is an enzyme that plays diverse and crucial roles in protein crosslinking and post-translational modification, contributing to the structural integrity and functionality of proteins in various biological processes and physiological conditions. Its activity is essent

Uses | transglutaminase is an enzyme said to activate the skin's physiological functions. |
Uses | Transglutaminase has been used in a study to improve quantifiable assays to fully characterize the role of transglutaminase in diseases such as Huntington′s disease and Alzheimer′s disease.Transglutaminase has also been used in a study to develop a nonradioactive dot blot assay for transglutaminase activity. |
Biochem/physiol Actions | Transglutaminase from guinea pig liver consists of a single polypeptide chain of 691 amino acid residues. It has six potential glycosylation sites (Asn-X-Ser or Asn-X-Thr), but it is not glycosylated. The molecular mass is approximately 76.6 kDa. It is calcium dependent and has several calcium binding sites. The enzyme is inhibited by iodoacetamide and N-ethylmaleimide in the presence of calcium. It catalyzes the incorporation of small molecular weight amines into γ-glutamine sites of proteins. In the absence of small molecular weight amines, it catalyzes the cross linking of proteins that results in the formation of γ-glutamyl-ε-lysine side chain peptides. Liver transglutaminase is a nonzymogenic enzyme. |
