Riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2, is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in various biological processes. It is an essential nutrient that must be obtained from the diet as the human body does not produce it.
Riboflavin is involved in energy production as a component of two coenzymes, flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), which participate in the electron transport chain and various metabolic pathways. These coenzymes are integral to the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, facilitating the conversion of food into energy.

Sources of riboflavin include dairy products, eggs, lean meats, green leafy vegetables, and enriched or fortified cereals and grains. Riboflavin deficiency can lead to a condition known as ariboflavinosis, which may manifest as sore throat, redness and swelling of the lining of the mouth and throat, cheilosis (cracking of the lips), glossitis (inflammation of the tongue), and dermatitis.
Supplementation with riboflavin is sometimes recommended to address deficiencies, particularly in populations with limited access to diverse food sources or specific dietary restrictions.
